TRCF is proud to recognize the grantmakers throughout Western Pennsylvania that provide much-needed grants to small non-profits and grassroots organizations as they work to promote social justice and change. Each month will recognize one of these organizations as Grantmaker of the Month.
Staunton Farm Foundation
Grantmaker of the month-March 2012
The Staunton Farm Foundation has been promoting behavioral health in Southwestern Pennsylvania since 1937. The founder of the foundation, Matilda S. McCready, was a Pittsburgh native who grew up on the North Side of the city and later moved to Sewickley. She was a successful business women who managed her own business affairs and her stock holdings in the oil and natural gas companies her brothers had led.
She had originally wanted her estate to be used as a hospital for people with mental illnesses; however, it quickly became apparent that there was not enough money to operate that kind of center. Eventually the Staunton Farm Foundation help[ed the Sewickley Valley Hospital develop a clinic similar to the one Mrs. McCtready had hoped for.
The Foundation’s assets eventually grew large enough for the Board to start to making grants to other agencies within Allegheny County that promoted behavioral health awareness. Today, the foundation’s mission “is dedicated to improving the lives of people who live with mental illness and/or substance use disorders. The Foundation works to enhance behavioral health treatment and support by advancing best practices through grant making to non-profit organizations in ten southwestern Pennsylvania counties.”
