Grantmaker of the Month – July 2012

Grantmaker of the Month

TRCF is proud to recognize the grantmakers throughout Western Pennsylvania that provide much-needed grants to small non-profits and grassroots organizations as they work to promote social justice and change. Each month will recognize one of these organizations as Grantmaker of the Month.

The Falk Fund

Grantmaker of the Month, July 2012

The Falk Fund works to achieve a tolerant, just and inclusive society by reforming racially discriminatory policies and practices, promoting inclusion, increasing access to opportunity, and ensuring fair allocation of public resources. The Fund has granted over $18 million towards research, media, civic engagement and public policy work specifically benefiting African-American communities. The Fund also opposes discrimination based on religion, gender, sexual orientation, and physical or mental disability.

The Falk Fund supports innovative and imaginative projects that address disparities and inequities in healthcare, education, workforce development, mental health, housing, transportation, and environmental and criminal justice. Typical grants range from $5,000-$40,000 per year.

The Fund is a partner in the Racial Justice Collaborative, which supports public interest lawyers and community organizations employing legal tools to achieve equity. The Falk Fund also established the Pennsylvania Dream Fund, an offshoot of the national Fulfilling the Dream Fund, to strengthen race- and gender-inclusive policies and practices.

Maurice Falk created The Maurice and Laura Falk Foundation in 1929 as a memorial to his late wife, Laura Falk. During the Great Depression the Foundation’s mission was “To extend the frontiers of economic knowledge through research – competent, honest, and unbiased – and to make it available in clear and nontechnical language to the public.” The Foundation branched out to political science and healthcare, and was established with a 35-year term.

In 2004, the Board of Trustees voted to refine the mission statement and simplify the name to the Maurice Falk Fund. On December 31, 2006, the Maurice Falk Fund and the Leon Falk Family Trust combined to form the Falk Foundation. The new Falk Foundation serves as a lasting legacy to the Falk brothers.
