Program Overview

The Three Rivers Community Foundation’s Youth Ambassador Program builds a framework of growing awareness in the next generation to support the work of progressive grantmakers and grassroots organizations in southwestern Pennsylvania.  The program will create our region’s next generation of change makers.

In this initiative to raise awareness among young people and engage them in active participation in the movement for social justice, the TRCF Youth Empowerment interns will recruit and train 8-12 high school Youth Ambassadors to lead a 3 part workshop series on diversity and inclusion to 4th-6th graders at the Oakland and Centre Ave YMCA summer camps.  Community leaders and mentors will be invited to speak to  Youth Ambassadors about the effective work that they do in the community and how they address one of TRCF’s seven focus areas:  Disability Rights; Economic Justice; Environmental Justice; Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Issues; Peace and Human Rights; Racial Justice;  and Women, Youth, and Families Issues.

This year, Ambassadors will be awarded a stipend of $150 for completing the program.

Why Should I Become a Youth Ambassador?

YAP gives YOU the opportunity to be a leader in the community!  Through workshops and sharing, you will be trained to be a mentor for students in grades 4th-6th.  You will have an opportunity to share your story by leading workshops for students around social justice issues that you are passionate about.  This is a great opportunity to be creative and have fun with other like minded youth.  As you start tothink about jobs and universities, this program will be a great resume builder!  The skills that you develop as a Youth Ambassador will be useful in all aspects of your life.

What is the time commitment?

‘YAP Summer’ runs every Tuesday from mid-June 2012 to mid-August 2012. Youth Ambassadors will meet four times; June 19th, June 26th,July 3rd, and July 10th for 4-hour afternoon training sessions from 12:00pm – 4:00 pm.  One of these sessions will be a community service project where you will get to have fun directly helping in the community.  This will be an outdoor project and the day will run for 11:00am – 5:00 pm.  As a Youth Ambassador you will take your hard work and training and lead a series of three 1-hour workshops for 4th-6th graders at the YMCA summer camps on July 17th, July 24th and July 31st.  These sessions will last three hours in total with preparation time and debriefing.
