Grantmaker of the Month
TRCF is proud to recognize the grantmakers throughout Western Pennsylvania that provide much-needed grants to small non-profits and grassroots organizations as they work to promote social justice and change. Each month will recognize one of these organizations as Grantmaker of the Month.
The Lambda Foundation
Grantmaker of the Month, June 2012
The Lambda Foundation is a charitable, non-profit organization serving the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) community in the Greater Pittsburgh area through grants and scholarships. The Foundation’s mission is to raise and distribute funds for educational, social, cultural, health, and artistic programs that benefit this community.
Since its founding in 1983, the Lambda Foundation has awarded nearly $1 million in grants to organizations, individuals and projects that have a positive impact on the LGBTQ community. The Foundation contributes to the operation of existing LGBTQ organizations, the development of new organizations and projects, and the continuation of HIV/AIDS prevention, education, treatment, and awareness. The Foundation’s primary fund-raising event is an annual ball.
The Foundation’s grants have been responsible for helping fund such notable organizations as: Persad Center; ACLU Pittsburgh; Pittsburgh AIDS Task Force (PATF); Bet Tikvah; Shepherd Wellness Community; Women’s Law Project; Gay & Lesbian Community Center (GLCC) Pittsburgh; Renaissance City Choirs; Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians & Gays (PFLAG) Pittsburgh; Western PA Freedom to Marry; and others.
Recently, the Lambda Foundation helped organize the launch of the Pittsburgh Pirates’ It Gets Better video. Local LGBTQ youth, along with their families and friends, were invited to the premiere of the video and given discounted tickets to the game.
