Grantee of the Month
TRCF is proud to recognize our grantees throughout Southwestern Pennsylvania that promote social justice and change through their activities. Each month we will recognize one of these organizations as our Grantee of the Month.
Grantee of the month, June 2012
Persad Center is the nation’s second-oldest licensed counseling center specifically created to serve lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) people. Founded in 1972, Persad Center is currently celebrating 40 years of providing quality services to the community. Through strong commitment by the Board of Directors and from the generosity of the community, Persad Center is able to offer reduced fee, or free, counseling services to eligible clients.
Strengthening the region’s LGBTQ communities and their allies, Persad Center seeks to increase the well being of sexual minority persons, all persons affected by HIV/AIDS, and the family members and significant others of these persons.
As a community counseling organization, Persad offers counseling and therapeutic services for target populations; prevention and well being services for the community; advocacy and support for individuals and groups affected by discrimination; and training, education and research to increase understanding.
In addition, Persad Center is an AIDS Service Organization providing a variety of services to the HIV/AIDS community. Persad Center is committed to helping LGBTQ and HIV+ individuals and the people who love them in a caring way that is sensitive, non-judgmental and culturally specific.
Persad is located in Pittsburgh, PA with an outreach center in Washington, PA and serving all of Western Pennsylvania. They recently opened a satellite office in Erie, PA.
Persad’s Community Safe Zone program is creating safe spaces and events in Western PA counties including Beaver, Butler, Westmoreland, Washington, and Erie. If you would like to get on the mailing list to receive updates on upcoming events, please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org.
As a part of Persad’s affiliation with SAGE (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders), Persad is offering the National Resource Center training program on GLBT Aging.
Persad has also just launched a state wide training and consultation project with the PA Bureau of Family Health to work with 14 agencies that provide sexual health education to youth.
TRCF’s 2011 grant to Persad Center sponsored one-on-one community organizing work with individuals, schools, public officials, and service providers in Beaver and Armstrong counties to build allies and support for local LGBTQ residents.
