On July 3, 2012, Three Rivers Community Foundation’s
will participate in a community service day at Pennley Garden!
This service day is one component of the Youth Ambassadors’ four-week training to become community ambassadors for diversity, respect, and inclusion. The Ambassadors will use their training to facilitate three workshops for 4th-6th graders at the YMCA Summer Camps in Oakland and Homewood, and at the Centre Ave YMCA later this summer. The workshops will encourage young people to open their hearts, minds, and actions to respecting people’s differences and including everyone.
The community service day presents a valuable opportunity for the Ambassadors to engage with the community and learn about one of TRCF’s issue areas, environmental justice.
TRCF was referred to Pennley Gardens by a past grantee, GTech Strategies. Pennley Garden is a community garden in East Liberty operated by Grow Pittsburgh.
“Pennley Garden started out as a lot of sunflowers, but has branched out to a community garden due to the demands of neighbors. Year 1 (2010) had four local girls growing their own peppers and lettuce, while keeping the two gardeners company. Year 2 (2011) had a burst of new interest, with vegetables growing in over 20 beds.”
“Grow Pittsburgh envisions the day when growing and eating healthy, local food is commonplace. Their mission is to demonstrate, teach and promote responsible urban food production.”
